Stimulation of aerobic and anaerobic biological processes by ultrasound
نویسنده
چکیده
Operators of wastewater treatment plants first of all are responsible for the required good quality of the effluent before it is discharged to the environment. Today attention is being shifted more and more to optimize the operation of treatment plants not only to reduce energy consumption or other costs in an economic sense but with regard to ecological aspects like reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. So the challenge arises to improve the well established biological treatment processes targeting these goals without decreasing the quality of the effluents. First full-scale applications of high power ultrasound appeared more than ten years ago in Germany for the pre-treatment of waste activated sludge prior to anaerobic stabilization. Today about 80 treatment plants worldwide are equipped with this technology and provide confirmation on the success of this approach. Research is still carried out to better understand how ultrasound manifestations can impact also on aerobic biomass. This article reports on fundamental research as well as full-scale experience for the following applications: Improving N removal Reducing excess sludge Combating filamentous microorganisms

Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment Using Anaerobic Fluid Bed Reactor and Aerobic Mobile-Bed Biological Reactor
This research evaluated the efficiency of combined anaerobic-aerobic processes for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater. The anaerobic reactor consists of a 3.95 L Plexiglas column with 60 mm diameter and 140 cm height. The cylindrical particles of polyvinyl chloride with 2 mm diameter and 1250 kg m-3 density packed to 60 cm of column were used as biomass saving material. The d...
متن کاملComparison of Nitroaromatic Compounds Metabolites Types by Sequencing Performance of Anaerobic-Aerobic and Aerobic-Anaerobic Processes
Introduction: Xenobiotic contamination is a global concern. Nitroaromatic compounds enter the environment through ammunition, ordnance disposal, burning the outdoors, and leakage of ammunition. Thirty percent of explosives enter the environment without any change, which can cause pollution of soil, water, and health concerns. So, effective remediation of the contaminated area is necessary. Mat...

A MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Backgrounds and Objectives: Large quantities of sludge are produced in biological wastewater treatment. Because this sludge is highly rotten, it should be stabilized before its disposal. Aerobic and anaerobic digestion is widely considered as stabilization techniques. Because of high retention tim...
متن کاملAerobic and anaerobic PCB biodegradation in the environment.
Studies have identified two distinct biological processes capable of biotransforming polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): aerobic oxidative processes and anaerobic reductive processes. It is now known that these two complementary activities are occurring naturally in the environment. Anaerobic PCB dechlorination, responsible for the conversion of highly chlorinated PCBs to lightly chlorinated orth...
متن کاملRecent Developments in Biological Treatment of Brewery Effluent
During the last two decades the brewing industry has shown increasing awareness for environmental protection and the need of sustainable production processes. Implementation of ISO 14001 certification and more stringent environmental legislation have been important drivers for the brewing industry to invest in biological effluent treatment. The role of biological effluent treatment is discussed...
